Name: Nim
Gender: Female

Appearance:

Nim is short, of course, being a low-level faerie. She looks like a human in miniature, thick autumn hair hanging neatly down her back, as if simply her dark looks have tamed it from daring to frizz. Even with that mane of rosy woodland hair, though, she is fairly easy to overlook. As she would reiterate, she looks human. Her features are sharp and chiseled, but in a way that makes her look more human, as though she has been through an ordeal which hardened her. Still, she looks fairly young, maybe even under drinking age if one could ignore those eyes. Those eyes seem to have so many layers to them…

Those eyes are hazel. In Nim’s irises amber is mixed with pale, olive green until it’s impossible to disentangle the two colors, darker at the outside rim, but with highlights that seem to shallow to a pale shade of green with only the tiniest lacing of brown creeping in. They are beautiful eyes, but they are hidden by weary lids that long to close and dark-fringed by her thick, auburn lashes. High over her eyes arch dark eyebrows, which all too often have the tilt of skepticism. However, while the colors are grand, looking for emotions in those eyes would be a waste of time. There are emotions there, but they are hard emotions, and they have lingered in her eyes longer than any encounter which may influence her moods. There is no space for new emotions to take up residence in those eyes.

While Nim is small, she believes she is solid enough to stand her own ground. She’s not a fragile little thing; for all that her chosen colors seem to be shades of gray and white, maybe with green trim, usually dresses, too. Not that she’s against getting down and dirty, either. If she’s going to wear trousers, they’re usually dark gray or a soft brown, and a green top. That’s of course if she’s going through forest… She generally doesn’t want to be spotted, so that goes without saying. Colors that blend in are comfortable for Nim. Nim’s skin has zero freckles or blemishes, but of course Nim can still find fault with it. What she fault’s most are her feet and her calves. Her feet are too wide, and her calves are thick and strong, perfect for running, but as Nim will tell any, she’s done with running.

Her hands, on the other hand, Nim finds very slender and beautiful. They used to play piano, and were so beautiful flowing across the keys… They are barren of rings or trinkets, though. Her ears and neck are also unadorned by any form of ornamentation. There are no tattoos on her skin. In other words she seems very plain, as though she has cast away any material thing that might be connected to her. It’s a statement of a sort, if you want to see it that way.

Defects: Susceptible to the lure of alcohol.
Age: Twenty-three
Personality:

Oh dear, I’m not quite sure I have the strength for this… One might call Nim’s personality sad, if they hadn’t known her all too long. Contemplative might be a more polite way to dismiss it. And that’s just what people might do; dismiss her as one more haunted person wandering around. Of course, like everyone, Nim has so much more to her than that. You may also wish to read her history before you read her personality, because it has a lot of bearing on who she is. Although, it can also be said that Nim’s personality influenced her history.

When Seth found her, of course, Nim’s tale was rather reminiscent to that told in Cat Stevens’ song “Sad Lisa”. On the other hand, it’s remarkable how well Nim recovered. She did not stay dependent for long, and rather than sad, Nim was happy. Even happy she was still wistful, but she loved Seth and Joey, and was very protective, watching over the two of them to the best of her abilities. One of her favorite parts of the day was telling stories to Joey before bedtime. They were always different, usually made up on the spot. While they always had an element of sorrow to them, as her personality dictated, there was always hope depicted in them. And they ended happily, because she was with Seth and Joey.

Like most faeries, Nim is attuned to nature. This is why most of the places she has chosen to live are rural, with available escapes ready, to both sea and forest. Nim loves to walk through the forest, lowering her feet on cool, damp, moss like a velvet green cushion. She rarely wears shoes; she would prefer to touch the earth with her feet, even though it meant the toughening of the soles of her feet. Already she had calluses on her hands from hard work.

That’s right, Nim believes in diligence. There’s a passionate ferocity to her, when she’s trying to achieve something, and she’s just too stubborn to give up. She also believes in fighting her own battles, and not letting anyone else get involved, if she has a say in the matter. Gosh, how noble, and annoying. So, Nim chips away at her projects, time after time. There’s very little joy in the project for Nim upon actually finishing, as it’s always onto the next one, but she does feel like she’s accomplishing something while she’s working on them. I guess if she can’t really be an alcoholic she’ll settle for being workaholic. Addicts need an addiction to keep them carrying onwards…

Nim does try to be better to others than she is to herself. While she is a pessimist, Nim doesn’t want to share all her negative emotions with others, and will try to suppress the worst of these negative impulses. She’s not Eeyore reincarnated, after all. Nim does genuinely want to be cheerful, she just often makes the mistake of thinking she needs to loosen up to do that, and that to loosen up she needs alcohol, which is not a hundred percent true. When Nim does laugh, it’s an open laugh, never a scoffing one, and it lights up her face, and the room. This makes Nim’s laughter rather contagious.

Finally, Nim is protective over the people she loves. She’s not confident she’ll be able to protect them, but she’ll die trying if those are her options. This is probably why it’s so frustrating for Nim, the way Joey died. It was a terrible accident, and there’s nothing she could have done. There was no way she could have protected him or the rest of the town from the tragedy. Helplessness is not something Nim deals with well, and she rages against it rather violently.

History:

Once, Nim had a longer name. She no longer remembers it. It probably got lost in a bottle somewhere. That was outside of Shaman, though. Even after Shaman had opened its doors Nim clung to Earth with unnerving ferocity. This wasn’t due to any loyalty to the humans as a whole, but to one human, and the fact that there was no one there to move on to the new world with her. Nim had hidden herself for a long time, not admitting to be of the faerie. She was pushed to the edges of civilization, occasionally signing up as part of a peace corps or some other programs. They cast a bit of a rosy glow around her, so people overlooked some of her other oddities. Eventually, though, the pressure got to her and Nim stopped doing these sorts of things. She simply moved from place to place, making only enough money to survive, hitch a ride, and set up again in a new location, preferably as close to natural settings as she could get. It was in Maine she began drinking, buying a little oblivion. She doesn’t talk about her family, or her history, so one might assume it’s something back there she’s trying to cover up when she indulges in alcohol.

Then Nim met a man, named Seth, and his child Joey, when she moved to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. At first they were just neighbors to her. Then, Seth found her wandering after she had been drinking, and realized she didn’t remember anything, even how to get back to her house. He tried to straighten her out, time and again to her frustration. It wasn’t only that Seth was a good person, though. It was also because he worried that Joey would see her. Finally, Seth stopped leaving her alone. It’s hard to know how he helped and what he said to her, because she doesn’t speak of that, either, but they became friends. At first there was the thought that they might date, but the relationship lapsed into the comfortable relationship of brother and sister. Nim stayed, partially because she owed Seth, and partially because she adored Joey.

These things weren’t meant to last in Nim’s life, though. Seth fell in love, but although Nim was glad for him, there was nothing for her there. Seth’s wife was a jealous woman, and so Nim stayed away, not arguing. Alcohol began to appeal again. However, Nim always wrote to Joey. One day, Seth called up. A terrible tragedy had befallen their town. A bus of kids on their way to a hockey game had slid off the road and fallen into the ocean. Joey had been on that bus. Though Nim had moved on to a new town, she felt an affinity for that town, since she had made a connection there. So, she returned for the funeral. Though Nim wanted to comfort Seth, as he had done for her, there was no scrap of solace she could offer. What was worse was that Seth’s wife felt Nim had abandoned Joey, and clearly didn’t want Nim there, among the mourning family, despite Seth’s invitation. Nim probably should have acted, but she couldn’t break down the barrier. That was when Nim decided it was time to leave Earth.

Shaman startled Nim. She wasn’t sure what to make of this place. When she arrived, of course, there was both tenderness and evil, living under the same roof. It was chaos. It drove her back to her drink, though she wasn’t out of hand. Just enough alcohol consumed to calm her down and dull her senses that adjusting wasn’t so much to ask of her overtaxed mind. She was homeless for a while, but now she seeks to rise against Mallos. There are humans she still cares for oh-so-much.

Anything else you wish to include: I’ve looked at Shaman before, but I’m a little nervous with the point and coin system, since I don’t usually work with any such systems. I’ll give it my best go. Also, I realize the sample post is a bit unorthodox. I figured it wouldn’t hurt to write a post from a past perspective.
