Freebies are often granted to "all active characters". A character is considered active if it has made an IC post within the last 2 weeks. Posts made after the freebie was posted do not count.

even if you were here last year, i advise you read this.
the advent calendar runs from the 1st-24th december (inclusive). each advent will be posted on a random board around the site, ic or ooc, every day at a random time each day. posting it at a random time keeps it fair for people of all different timezones; the advent may be posted at 2am GMT one day, when all the americans are awake but the brits aren't, or at 10am GMT, when the brits are awake but the americans aren't. this is how we did it last year and it worked then.
to claim an advent prize, reply to the advent post. this year, advent prizes may be claimed by multiple people (it'll specify on the prize) so don't be deterred if you see someone else has already posted.
there is no need for you to post on updates. replying to the advent post is sufficient.
where prizes are given to characters, not members (e.g. points, coins) you must reply with the name of the character you are claiming the prize for. you can't simply claim it as a member and then put off deciding who you want it to go to. if you reply to a advent which has a character-specific prize and you do not specify which character it goes to, your claim will be deemed invalid and someone else will be able to claim it instead of you.
for member-specific prizes (e.g. doubloons, shop items) you do not need to specify the character.
for land points, you must specify the territory you want to give them to.
there is no limit to the amount of advents you can claim but you can only claim one prize off one advent.
