Broken Dreams:
( I have nothing left for you to shatter )
Grandeur:
( the saddest song you will ever sing )
The sweet scent of autumn leaves floated past the darkened muzzle, bringing with it three other familiar smells. They were of his son, his herd member Anaxandra, and of a mare who lived in the Silver Lakes, Spectre. He smiled. He had not seen Spectre in quite some time, and a wave of cacoethes washed over him: he had to see the trio of them. It had been several days since he had last seen Anaxandra, and he longed to know how she was faring. Hope filled him as he trotted over the small, personable gathering. I do hope her spirits have improved since she birthed Grandeur… I cannot bear to see another in pain, I do not wish it upon any other, most of all those I care for.
Slowing his gait down to an exuberant walk, a smile broke out on his face as he saw his son, Grandeur, the little snowcapped wonder of his world. Grandeur’s eyes brightened as he saw his father, and he gave out an odd cry as he bounded towards him. After nuzzling him, he tilted his son’s face up towards him, and spoke, “There’s my little man! I love you,” and drew a poor rendition of a heart on the earth beneath them. He had been taking time to teach Grandeur to read lips. As the colt would get older, he knew that he’d pick up on body language, and express things that way, but for now as a child he spoke loudly- in volumes- with his body. Everything was new and exciting!! Love you too, daddy! he thought, as he put his hoof inside the crookedly drawn heart and licked his father. He then scampered back to his mother, and looked at the other mare, Spectre.
“Anaxandra, I am very happy to see that you have made it here with our son safely. I apologize for not making the trek with the rest of the herd, however the Oracle asked me to do something for her, and it could not be delayed.” Walking over to the white mare whose spots only make it up her legs, he nuzzled her and whispered that he had missed her company. “No matter what, I shall never abandon you. I may not perpetually be around, but I am never one to simply abandon friends, nor a friend who has birthed my child. Come, lets meet the others here.”
After speaking with his dearest friend, he turned to Spectre, the mostly blind mare. Oddly enough, he had never noticed this about the mare when he first met her. Broken was not one to usually pick up on another’s flaws, not right away. “Spectre, how are you faring? I see that your belly is swollen with life inside! Congratulations. I am sure your foal will get along with Grandeur. Oh! I have not introduced you to him- he is my pride and joy.” He motioned for Grandeur to come over to him, and he bounded right on over. “Spectre, this is my son, Grandeur; Grandeur, this is Spectre, a friend,” Broken introduced the pair.
Grandeur went right up to the lovely little mare and nuzzled her chest, eyes lit with excitement. He attempted to bound back near his mom and dad, but his legs were still quite long and lanky, and he had not grown in to them, so he tripped slightly and grew embarrassed. Blue eyes flashed back and forth between the other three adults, and he ran to hide in between his moms front legs.
Broken let out a small chuckle, “It is all right son,” and bobbed his head. “Spectre, Anaxandra is his mother; I believe you may remember her from when she and I first travelled to the Lakes?”
