Pitra was not displeased with Tangieer’s reaction.
Had she been any younger, the graying mare’s response would have gone straight to her head! The emotions that crossed her face, the pause that had suspended her voice… It was reactions like this that Pitra used to live off of. Back home it had been the era of her ego and the birth of a tyrant; but as the years passed it seemed that she had grown out of such a stage. Pitra no longer demanded attention, for it seemed that whatever she did and wherever she went, she received it. It was true that a part of her would always crave it, yes, but tonight… she only deigned for it.
Essus blinked up, startled, as the duck suddenly flapped its wings and moved onto the mustang’s back. Curious as to exactly what it was doing up there, he slowly moved away from Pitra’s hooves and made his way around Tangieer’s legs to peer up at Cameo, though he was careful to keep his distance. He had seen only few ducks in his lifetime swimming about in a small pond, but until now he had never seen one up close... Or on a horse’s back? Such an odd looking creature! (Though he knew he was hardly one to talk.) The sudden hiss of annoyance in the back of Pitra’s mind confirmed this, and he gave the creature a happy smile before meandering back over to where he’d been only moments before.
The coy smile upon her lips and the intrigued look in Pitra’s dark eyes was not meant to be intimidating. She merely wanted to collect upon this moment and continued to drink in the sight of the interesting pair before her in silence. She had always been one to take her time in such cases. Before she could answer the young one’s question, it seemed her axian was anxious to provide her with their own names instead. Though her attention was on the speaking duck, Pitra was not so distracted as to let the approaching stallion go unnoticed. His scent was still faint in the air, his advance even more so. The only notice Pitra gave to the new stranger was a flick of her ears before they returned to their upright position.
“Greetings, young Tangieer and Cameo, horse and water fowl of Tarot.” She straightened, only turning when the dark stallion was close enough so they could hear his speech. Pitra’s tail slapped against her flank playfully, her voice lightening in tone as she faced him with a new spark in her eyes. “And to you as well, stallion who believes in chance.”
Taking a step or two back as if she were appraising something with great value, Pitra let her eyes wander freely over him before they stopped on the falcon at his side. Essus seemed uncomfortable under the bird’s intense gaze and shrunk back with instinct. “I like the other bird better… It doesn’t have claws or a sharp beak.”
His lack of confidence upset Pitra, and she wondered exactly how she got stuck with an axian whose character was nothing like her own? What a coward!
“Perhaps his feathered friend is hungry, Essus?” Her irritation with him made it all the easier for the malice to slip into her voice, Essus flinching before stepping forward to prove he was not afraid. "Hello... I'm Essus. And this is – .."
With a toss of her head, Pitra looked from Tangieer to the Stallion, ignoring the Hutia's introduction. “You may both call me Pitra.”
