Pensions are nothing new to public service. They have long been used to induce men and women to serve their nation, state and community dating back to before the Revolutionary War. Our career military personnel justly earn a modest pension for the sacrifice they are willing to make in service of our country today.
We have all seen politicians rally around uniformed police officers for quick campaign photo-ops with one hand on our shoulder, a wide smile and promise to support law enforcement while the other hand reaches for our endorsements, support and campaign funds. No politician will tell you they don't support law enforcement while they are seeking your vote. Public safety is always a "top priority" in their campaign rhetoric. Well, we are demanding you live up to your promises. Changing a system that is not broken to fix a temporary problem is not the answer. Raiding the retiree trust fund and premium tax dollars to bail out cities and counties who created their own problems is not the answer.
SENATE ACTION:
Senator Ring advised the committee and audience that his bill SB 1128 does not remove the DROP program from local pension plans. It does not remove COLA's and does not decrease accruals and multipliers. It does not mandate that all local plans go to a Defined Contribution Plan except for all new hires after 07/01/2011.
Senator Latvala and Senator Norman offered amendments that would delete the prohibitions on Defined Benefit plans for new hires after 07/01/2011. Fire and Police plans would be able to accrue and calculate up to 300 overtime hours in the Final Compensation. Premium tax dollars would not be used only to offset the unfunded plan but would be more flexible in the use of the dollars as originally intended.
