The Valley

Between the Meadow and the Field is the third of Beqanna’s Common Grounds. A rolling valley is bisected by a broad and shallow river. The grass is thick and lush, and this is a good place for a stallion to live with his family if he does not yet have a herd land.

She had heard him, heard the stallion blunder through the underbrush in search of her. She figured he was coming from a distance, but knew he would hear her. That was just how things went; stallions always heard the call of their mares when they needed them. Or just because, whatever the reason she knew he was coming. She stood quietly as her son finished his meal and tried out his new legs. Each were masked with black, signifying the ‘dun’ in him, as well as his mane and tail, which were ebony. His eyes were hers; his face was Pewters; as well as the amber champagne that made up his little body. His dark wings were the things that got her the most. Instead of visible strips, he had been given wings.

She grazed now, watching the newborn start to speed up with his pace. He was strong; she’d give him that, and would make one heck of a leader when his time came. The sound of plants being pushed aside made her jump a moment. Pewter came into the Valley, ears forward in wonder. He rounded her, seeing she was in pain and very tired. However he stopped once he spied the baby. Legs locked, ears snapped forward and nostrils widened. HotShot had taken the sight of the male well, yet hid a bit behind her legs. What worried her is when Pewter mumbled, ‘I don’t understand.’

She turned to face her stallion. “This is your boy. This is HotShot. I know he has wings, but they’re here instead of strips. What do you think Bane? Our boy’s a mythical.” She smiled widely at the thought of having such a powerful son, yet the look Pewter was giving him sent her protective instincts into overdrive. “Do you…have a problem with that Pewter Bane?”
