All the whispers, the warnings so clear . . . The silence was deafening, yet he could still feel life crawling over the surface of the Lakes, desperate for a sign of guaranteed survival, aching for the chance to stand and breathe. The changing weather brought winds that sent endless ripples across the surface of Marble Lake, the most prominent body of water in the kingdom and the witness to the last raid. The memories of that day, a day that would forever scar his memory as the day that his great kingdom fell, still echoed in his mind. There is no color more vibrant than that of blood and the hue that fell from his own brother made him realize that his own desire to succeed outmatched his need to be a better man. It had frightened him. Even his stay in that other world, a world that had given him the ability to lift from the earth and take to the skies, had been marred by what had happened here. It amazed him to see that the green grasses sprouted fully, showing no sign that, not too long ago, they had been covered in blood. Part of him questioned himself; did it really happen? Could it all have been his imagining? But the silence reminded him that he had failed. The Earth embraced him like a lust-driven lover. Threads of dust and rock wound its way around his legs and coated his body. The soil seemed to purr as it touched his skin. He felt it. He knew that he was being welcomed back to a place that he swore he would never see again, but would the others be so generous in their own words? They had no reason to trust his presence, no reason to think that him being there was a good omen. He was not a fool. When new leaders took power, it was a common strategy to down talk the reign of those before. He knew that he was blamed for the capture of the Lakes, even though his own battle had been won. Arianah…he could not think of her. There was a bitter taste in his mouth that he knew that he would have to swallow in order to survive here. That was the thing with life; one always had to survive. Otherwise, it is no longer life. The wind stirred, casting about the pile of feathers at his feet. They were gone now, those soft chains. Most would think that receiving the gift of winged flight would be something of which to show gratitude, but this lover of the Earth found it to be an imprisonment. The urge to fly, the need to leave what he loved the most, began to eat at him.
