Hi there,
I don't know much about '65 Marlins, but I can say that there are variations in the '66 models.
I have seen two different headlight bezel screw configurations on the '66, as well as two different clutch assemblys on the 4-speed models.
Although the 4-speed was not officially offered in 1965, there are some '65 4-speed cars. I suspect that these are later 1965 model Marlins, but cannot verify this. However, I can prove that the 4-speed Marlin was only officially offererd in 1966 from the original dealership options books that I have from 1965 and 1966.
Also, there were different windshield trims from 1965 to 1966. The windshield trim in 1965 was a thin stainless piece that slid into a groove in the rubber. In 1966, the stainless covered the rubber almost completely.
I have seen a 1966 car with the build number of 25 or 27 (can't remember which), that had the 1966 grille and the 1965 windshield trim.
So, my point in all of this is that AMC made changes as they went along. They also utilized parts and pieces on-hand at the time to get cars out the factory doors. So, don't sweat the differences in trim, screw configurations, grilles, etc. Just build your car like you want it and then get out and drive it and enjoy it!
I drive my 1966 4-speed as much as my time home allows. When my custom, one-of-a-kind 4-speed Marlin M/X is finished, I promise it will not be a trailer queen.
