Lemon juice applied to the skin has a long history of being used as a skin lightener.

Hydroquinones have a long history of being used as skin lighteners around the world. But many have toxicity, so these may not be the best choice. Although you could use uva ursi tea as a safe substitute. Uva ursi contains the glycosylated hydroquinone arbutin, which inhibits melanin formation.

Other skin lightening agents are kojic acid used in Japan to reduce melanin formation, licorice root extract also used to inhibit melanin
