Cedar Waxwings eating Hawthorn Flowers Posted on May 31, 2011 at 08:12:45 PM by Eleanor Kee Wellman
Today while on Wylie Rd. I saw four Cedar Waxwings moving from Hawthorn bush to hawthorn bush. It looked to me like they were actually eating the blossoms.
This is a hugely cropped imaged showing a waxwing with a blossom in its beak.
I found this on Birds of North America:
Main Foods Taken
From Bent 1950 and Cramp 1988 . Sugary fruits. Insects eaten during summer. Even in winter when feeding on fruits, also feeds on buds and insects. Oozing tree sap and flowers eaten in spring.
