Forest Frontiers
Forest Frontiers is a herdland of rolling hills and a fringe of forest on all sides. The picture it makes seems straight out of an Old Western story. The woodlands are predominantly pine, but it allows for a few deciduous trees here and there for a little change of scenery when the time is right. A small stream flows into a lake, a small hiccup in its long thin line of travel. Every morning, thanks to the higher base altitude, a small haze of mist is there to greet you -- enriching the air with a thick pine scent.

He bows. It’s a novelty, reminding her of someone else long ago. The poor old mare often spends most of her day lost in memories. This time though her minds her for Triton, also black. Until Rhamiel, she’d had a thing for tall, dark and handsome stallions – even Rhamiel was only lacking in the ‘dark’ category.
It was natural that he rebuked her. She couldn’t blame him one bit, but it was in the life of a herd stallion to meet strife. Had he owned a herd in the same era as Deg, when fewer stallions desired their own patch of land and their own mares, he would no doubt have been much more compliant. In those days, there had been few problems. Few battles, few wounds. Sadly the golden era had passed into shadow.
“We are forbidden to interfere in the matters of herds. We cannot save your mares from other herd stallions, but if any kingdom threatens you or your family then it is our duty to protect you. Against an army you can do little, but we can back you up with ours. Fight for us, and we will not forget,” she offered in a soft voice, sincere and hopefully persuasive. She was taken by him, his humble life with a family. In mellowed the feisty battleaxe, made her putty in his hands. The life she wished she could have known, had she not fallen in love with her kingdom instead.
“You need not join our ranks. So long as you come to our aid in battle, we will be thankful. I can offer you sanctuary in the kingdom, access to our facilities. We may not be able to retrieve any of your mares – but I could arrange for a diplomat to check on her well-being if the worst should happen. Without directly affecting events, my kingdom will be at your services,” she said, then faded into silence.
Her eyes trained on him. She was not at all her normal self, the magic of her old herd land reaching deep to numb her heart. Quietly the grullo stayed to hear a response, all ferocity stolen from her soul.
