Fledglings Posted on June 24, 2011 at 07:36:58 PM by Ginny Moore
At least one nest worth of Hairy Woodpeckers has now fledged. The young are chipping at their parents almost non-stop.
Yesterday I had the privilege of having 7 Hairy and one intrepid little Downy at the same time in the crabapple tree.
I also got to see one fledgling land on a branch in the tree and then slowly lose its balance and topple over until it was hanging completely upside down. From its reaction, this was not a planned move.
Also, from the rapid rate at which the nectar is disappearing from the feeders and the increased number of birds feeding, I'm pretty sure that some hummingbirds have fledged and others are near fledging.
