Playground
Parents do not fear; your children are safe in the Playground. A benevolent fairy watches over young colts and fillies who come to frolic here. The trees are ancient things, and widely spaced (excellent for tag) and there are several low logs to leap over and many ponds and thickets full of wonder for the little ones. Come play and form friendships that will last a lifetime.

Astraeus’ voice sounds like it’s coming from a million miles away, and I press my eyes shut tighter, hoping that if I close them enough, the brightness will be gone. I feel as though years have passed since the brightness when I feel a soft muzzle against my face, and I reach out towards the shape who I know to be Astraeus, and I press my small head into the soft darkness that I know is his starry coat even if I cannot feel it. I try to picture the night that he imagines, and with my eyes stil tightly closed, I look up at the sky.
I see it as I do at home, framed with the slender pine boughs, and the stars are just the small pinpricks of light. No moon, I tell myself, no moon, and the image in my head becomes a little darker. The light pouring from my body softens as well, and I can see that even through my eyelids. Darker, I think, darker, darker, darker.
Another soft nose on my side and I gasp, startled, but it’s just another child’s voice, and she sounds so very nice, and I take a deep breath and concentrate again. Minutes tick by and the trail of tears running down my dark nose dries, the crickets change their song, and eventually I am as dark as the forest floor on a moonless night. I open my eyes hesitantly and am momentarily disoriented – why is the sky both beside and above me?!?- but then I pull my face from Astraues’ constellation-filled neck and the world rights itself again.
Taking a huge sigh of relief I murmur “Thank you” to my Starry Knight, and then turn my curious eyes toward the stranger who had helped me as well. “Hello” I say, stretching out my nose towards her as I pull myself up off the ground. “Have you done that before? You sounded like you had. Are you good at things like this, at light and stars and fighting shadows?”
