In the book "An illustrated history of Jackson County, Minnesota"
By Arthur P. Rose
In the chapter about the Belmont Massacre of 1862, where the largely Norwegian community was attacked by the Sioux and at least 14 settlers killed--out of the two hundred or so residents of the county.
I found the tax rolls for 1861. Knud Halverson and John Knudson ( aka. Johannes Knudsen) are listed as property owners. These two men are my GG grandfather and my GGG grandfather. The story continued that after the killings, most of the Norwegian community fled back to Iowa, or east to Houston county.
The Halverson/Knudson families settled in Fillmore County in 1862 and farmed there for over 100 years. John Knudson, enlisted in the Army and never returned from the War. Replies: There have been no replies.
