This river is famously known for its fish!

Tenebrae made no answer to either his comments about the water, or his suggestion about keeping her eyes open. He was probably right, she needed to practise with them, but for the present she couldn't be bothered with the trouble, and it was much easier talking to somebody like this. She could judge expressions perfectly from the tone of voice, but adding facial expressions made it so much more confusing.

Her eyes jerked open, though, when she heard him splashing about, bright with alarm. His shouts didn't help, but the crab didn't bother her. It was the water itself she was scared of, the chilling mass that clogged her throat and choked her lungs; the creatures that dwelled inside it were of no dread, though she wouldn't want to be anywhere near them. Drowning would be the worst possible way to die, and you couldn't trust rivers- tame one moment, they' d turn on you the next, and devour you. She shuddered at the thought of it, at the thought of the slimy river weed that'd choke you, the swift current to carry you to your grave.

She felt extremely grateful for the solid ground beneath her grey paws, the life giving air that whistled through  her lungs.

"Waters for creatures with either too many legs, or too few." she said, with a grimace. Sure, you could get blessings that let you breathe without the need for oxygen, but even the sensation of water soaking through your fur was horrible. Slimy, ice cold and wet. Yuk. How could anybody willingly go swimming? They were all insane. Tenebrae would sooner walk over hot coals.  Or tear her own fur off. Or any number of delightful things to do before breakfast.

Thinking of breakfast, Tenebrae realised she hadn't eaten since goddes knew when. A few days, anyway. Living off practically nothing when she was younger had made her small, stunted and skinny, and she was used to going for long periods without food. She forgot to eat more regularly than would appear possiBle, but she lived off mice and things anyway. She was still alive, anyway.
