Vidannia couldn’t believe it. After her twin brother had come back bragging about having knocked up some unknown chick in the meadow, Vidannia knew she had to do one better. After all, that was simply her nature – she always had to be the best at everything. So she had gone out searching through the Meadow to find the best guy around she could, and she’d found him. They’d had their little fling, and now, as spring sunshine melted away the snow and brought forth new vegetation, she had a foal to show for it. At first Vidannia had been nothing but perfectly pleased by the little winged smoky black filly – after all, she’d managed to produce a traited child despite being untraited herself (the father was, and she assumed that the traits came from him, but still, it was an achievement she doubted her brother Neurotoxin could lay claim to). But not long after the filly – Ikici as she’d named her – had been born, Vidannia had started to notice strange things about her daughter. While usually Ikici was a perfectly pleasant child, loving and obedient but not overly reliant on her mother, sometimes she was…strange. It was as if someone else was inside her body. Soon enough Vidannia had grown irritated with her child’s strangeness, and determined the girl must somehow be insane (something she attributed to the girl’s father, because it surely wasn’t a problem with her). Vidannia refused to have an insane child around (what Neurotoxin would have to say about that!), so all that was left was to do away with the child and hope that Ikici’s insanity had not been contagious.
The mother and daughter duo entered the Adoption Den together, Ikici looking around with all the interest of a child, while Vidannia grimaced, her ears already twitching and annoyed by the sounds of other far-off foals crying piteously. Reaching the dead-center of the Den, Vidannia stopped and looked down at Ikici. Stay here Ikici, she told the little filly firmly. Ikici simply blinked up at her mother and then nodded. Alright Momma, the little girl agreed. Pleased that it seemed the girl was in her right mind at this moment, Vidannia reached down to nuzzle her daughter’s shoulder one last time before turning and walking away. As she left Vidannia sighed; when she was normal, Ikici was a perfect child. When she was normal. Uttering one last sigh, the black mare left the Den and never looked back, disappearing back into the Meadow in search of her brother. Perhaps he’d have had better luck with his child…
Ikici watched her mother leave with unblinking eyes, not fully comprehending what was going on, but getting the distinct feeling that Vidannia would not be returning. The winged filly wasn’t sure why she felt this way, and so she settled down on the cold ground to wait for her mother’s return. Fluffing her black feathered wings, she settled the tight to her sides to keep her warm like a blanket, and glanced about her surroundings with curious grey eyes.
