Carden Alvar Nature Board by Bob BowlesSnowy Owl Carden

Hello All,

A female Snowy Owl was found by myself and a couple other friends at
12:30 PM on January 10, 2012 on the Mara/Carden boundary line. The
bird was sitting originally on the east side of the road just north of
the quarry. It was almost too far for the naked eye, but with
binoculars or a scope you could see it clearly. After watching the
bird for about a half hour, we left to do more birding. We came back
about an hour and a half later to find it on the west side of the road
very close, on the telephone pole. Throughout the rest of the day the
bird was always seen on the west side of the road right across from
the quarry, flying from rocks in fields to the telephone pole.
I have attached a photo, not a very great one, but you can tell it's a
female SNOW.
Other birds seen and heard in the area include:

Rough-legged Hawk
Pileated Woodpecker
Black-capped Chickadee
American Tree Sparrow

Enjoy!!
