what happens when the bride goes back to groom`s house on the wedding night?

I have a friend who just had a traditional wedding in Nigeria. She said that her family made her cousin go with her to her husband`s house because of tradition on her wedding night. After they were married. Is it true that traditionally the bride and groom are supposed to be chaperoned during their first night married?
