Jim,
I'm not sure how much this will help, but I can give you the original part #s for the '77.
Looks like:
318/360/400 exc. H.P., without California emissions, (S/C-N95) 4051145
318/360/400 4V exc. H.P., with California emissions, (S/C-N95) 4051112
(E68) 3780566
That's exactly as they appear in the manual. Now, some of that I can explain, some I cannot.
The first #4051145...since no carb. is mentioned, are we to assume that his is for 2bbl. applications, since the next number calls out 4V (4bbl.)? I'm not sure (but I'd guess NO), as the 4051145 is mark without Cali. emissions, and 4051112 is marked FOR Cali. emissions. So I think the only difference between these two is Cali. emissions, not carb. But I could be wrong.
The last number, with E68...E68 is the 400 4V HP engine. The first 2 numbers are "except HP". My "guess" would be that this is the smaller/narrower tank for cars with dual exhaust. I would therefore assume that the first 2 numbers are for the wider, single exhaust fuel tank.
