Limericks

Do you like to read limericks? And occasionally write them?

What can you do with this first line:

"There once was a writer who learned..."

Here's my try:
There once was a writer who learned,
When his thoughts to fiction were turned,
The editor snored,
The readers were bored;
He wept as his novel he burned.

Well, that wasn't too great. Bet you can do better, I'm sure! Give it a try -- let's see what happens.
