Carden Alvar Nature Board by Bob BowlesShrike; swan

A beautiful day in Victoria Road: +1, hazy sun, a slight breeze. The farm that borders Mitchell Lake on the north was covered with turkey tracks. South facing slopes are free of snow. A shrike, presumably northern, was flying from a tree branch down into the junipers below, then back into the tree while the chickadees in the area sounded the alarm.
There's a lot of open water in the narrows that lead to the dam. One swan was gliding west, too distant for me to be sure of ID. Then it put its head down, appearing more as though it was resting than preening. A beautiful and unexpected sight.
The day was complete when a raven croaked its way overhead at the farm gate leading to Richmond St.
