At the densest section of the forest, there is a brief clearing where a steady flow of water streams down the slippery stone staircase. The water here is cool and refreshing. Staircase Falls has been rumoured to be the place where reality is met by magic; where peaceful spirits dwell. They are rumoured to have healing powers that are used to help the desperately hurt, though no one has experienced this, except for, perhaps, Kaive.

I am one and they are many, yet I stand. They emerge from the shadows beneath the trees, little more than shadows themselves, to surround me in a loose circle, yet I stand. My heart hammers out its fear deep within my chest, my every instinct screaming at me to run, yet I stand. I remind myself that this is what Stormy must have felt, and suddenly my anger outweighs my fear. I lower my ears and raise my hackles as they grow ever nearer, my chocolate coat bristling. My golden eyes flash brightly as I survey their approach. They are far too many. They will have me within moments, their jaws rending my flesh. But no matter. Their crime still stands, and I will exact payment with my final breath.

Stormy, this is for you.

I coax a snarl, low and menacing, from my throat and lunge forward all at once. My frame meets with that of the nearest brute; he collapses under my unexpected weight. A small victory that is quickly overshadowed. The others fall upon me immediately, their umbral forms closing in and concealing my own. I writhe this way and that, jaws snapping wildly, closing upon everything within reach. Once or twice I am rewarded with a foreign bark of pain, the sharp tang of blood, but so outnumbered there is little I can do...

I shake my head violently, and suddenly their are no shadowy specters, no bloodstained clearing. There is only the girl and the falls, a mundane forest scene. My breath escapes in a rushing sigh as I move shakily forward to embrace her. As our foreheads meet, I close my eyes for a moment to regain control. They were gone, beyond my reach now. I could chase after them, to be sure, take my warriors and come back with their hides, but what good would that do? To put more lives in danger...no. That was not what was needed now. I open my eyes and gaze mournfully at the ashen fae, our faces mere inches apart.

"Stormy..." Her name hangs suspended in the air for a moment against the backdrop of the rushing water. "I wish there were more I could do for you. Spring Grounds will always be your home. So long as you remain within my borders, no harm shall come to you...or your family. Let us...let us never speak of this thing again. The pack will protect you now. And your pups...if it will bring you peace, tell the others that they are mine. I will not have them be a source of shame for you."

(T'is short, t'is awful, but t'is finally up!)
