Her gaze fell and she watched with an impassive expression as a large crimson flower blossomed into existence. Intriguing. She did not so much as blink when the squirrel ventured too close and met its untimely end. It was very interesting and educational. A lesser being might have felt sadness and the squirrel’s plight, or pity for the scruffy grey rodent, but her emotions went unstirred. After all, she was the child that ensnared rabbits in fire and snatched the wind from beneath the wings of birds, so that they would fall to the floor. Only to examine the sorry, battered little carcasses, and rip them apart with critical precision, just to see how they worked and moved. It had been fascinating to learn how that mass of crimson and sinewy flesh, all held together with white sticks and bundled up in fur or feathers, became a walking, flying, moving, living being. And how easily that spark could be snuffed out. It had also been interesting how much more fragile the bird’s bones had been. They disintegrated at the slightest touch. Hollow. She came to the conclusion that this was how they defied gravity and flew, by making themselves almost impossibly light. When she was granted her own wings, when she was much older, she had wondered how her own were put together. She suspected similarly, though there was no way of knowing. The thing was, as she had dissected, she learned that everything was just a variation on a theme. It was just the packaging that changed. So she had stopped bothering. There was no point in continuing her investigations once her hypothesis had been proved. She had come off as a sadistic little child, with the blood of many small, unfortunate beasts on her hooves. She had been told her behaviour was creepy, but she did not understand the sentiment. But the deaths had not been in vein. And her actions had not been for some weird little kick, but performed in the pursuit of knowledge. Like a scientist. Knowledge was power. Surely, by now, she had proved that.

The show over, she looked up. Her new Queen seemed similarly unmoved by the demise of the squirrel. Just as well. She would never make a good leader if she let her emotions get in the way. That was when Viri had chosen to step aside. The time shift had thrown her entire life into chaos, and in the disarray her cage broke and the emotions were set free. When time was fixed, somehow she could not find a way to fix the cage also. It had taken her some time to sort her head out again. Time, and the return of her beloved jungle.

I prefer positive actions to mind games.

She had never been one to mince words or cryptically hide her meaning. She tackled her problems head on, and for that reason, while she respected those who’s skills lay in the Mesa, she herself chose to steer clear.

Tell me the name of the supposed inflictor of such violence. They will need to be dealt with.

Nor was she one for beating about the bush or asking questions. Questions were unnecessary. If information was needed, you sought it out for yourself. Otherwise you were trusting the word of another, and they could omit information, be misinformed, or fabricate it completely. When it was only the word of another you had to go on, she just cut to the point. Why use that irritating piece of punctuation? Her cool monotone did not make it sound like an order. Just another fact. As queen she had used such language without thought it might offend, because she was in charge and therefore no offence was ever caused. Now she was at the bottom of the ranks it didn’t even occur to her that it might be inappropriate. Social situations and etiquettes were not her strong point.
