At the densest section of the forest, there is a brief clearing where a steady flow of water streams down the slippery stone staircase. The water here is cool and refreshing. Staircase Falls has been rumoured to be the place where reality is met by magic; where peaceful spirits dwell. They are rumoured to have healing powers that are used to help the desperately hurt, though no one has experienced this, except for, perhaps, Kaive.

The Sweet Smell of R A I N

Four taupe appendages dance upon the earth’s crust, the choreography of this artiste’s steps is intricate and every carefully positioned stride appears to be well rehearsed. Crissing and crossing, her paws lift and fall, high then low in a matchless, incomparable dance. All four paws seem to leave the ground at once as she rotates in a distinguished and mesmerizing loop, and all at once they find the ground, each paw lands one right next to the other. Moving forward and left then right she dances along to the unknown music in her cranium, a beat that is known only to herself.

Sliding to a stop, this vision halts; creamy paws tripping awkwardly over one the other as the rhythm is shattered. With a snap of her head and one wrong motion the entire melody dissipates in the canine’s head, as it always seems to, just as the tension is growing in the dance. At the very moment so crucial in the song the girl has forgotten the lyrics, the beat, and the dance all in the very same instant. How does one go about forgetting something that intricate, something so deeply engrained in your brain? Perhaps, yes, perhaps she never learned.

Perhaps this girl is wandering through her life only knowing how the song starts, how only the beginning of the dance moves. Perhaps this girl knows only the first few beats and this is why she cannot move her feet to the rest of the rhythm. What a sad story that would make this, yet, would it not be worse to know the song and forget it? Isn’t this what life is, that you know the beginning, you know everything leading up to this very moment, but the next moment, the next dance step, you simply haven’t experienced it, you have not stopped to learn the entire dance, and so you must learn the steps as you go along.

And so, with a frustrated sigh this ghostly colored danseuse pulls her body off the ground where she so ungracefully fell, shakes out her creamy coat, and begins walking away from the deserted clearing. Paw-step after boring paw-step the girl treks quietly through this darkened canopy we know so well as the forest. If you were to glance at the sky, seeking any sort of information, you are in for disappointment. A broad thick covering stretches out over the expanse overhead. Blocking the warmth from the sun’s rays, and only here or there does a filtered streak manage to fight through the array of greens to kiss the ground gently.

Occasionally this lightly toned girl passes through this filtered light; disrupting the contact with the ground that these little streams of light fight so hard to establish. As the warmth these lights convey absorbs into her thickly coated body the girl pauses, for merely the briefest of seconds. Allowing her dark, ocean toned gazers to close and enjoy the moment. Reminding the girl, not all of life is dark.

Perhaps this fatale compares too many things to her life, the light spots in the dark forest, the dance she can only remember some of the steps to. The meals that enter and fade away from her stomach, like all those she has met in times past. Perhaps she simply thinks too much. However if the latter fact be true, it would only be because she is alone far too often. Perhaps all this girl really needs is a friend; someone to disrupt her raging thoughts and difficult mind. But before this thought can even be entertained in her cranial, a bright light disrupts her thinking process. Her journey has not ended. No, it is just beginning.
