The mare stood like a statue as her queen surveyed her, her posture as tall and proud as ever. She had nothing to hide. She knew that she was built to fight, and she had proved time and again that she was capable. As a rule of thumb she was not a violent creature. However, she had devoted a great deal of time and effort to the battlefield in the name of the Valkyries throughout her life, all to ensure they were kept safe and happy. Whether it was to bring an enemy down, rescue a lost sister, or simply to hone her skills, she always put her all in, because it was all for the sisterhood she had devoted her life to. That was the primary goal. Any other rewards were just fringe benefits; like the tokens collected in war. Enhancing her elements past the Air she was born with had never really been a priority in her life. She felt little connection to any stone other than her diamond. A little towards the sapphire that sat nestled above it in her chest, because of the links to Courant and the jungle, but it was not the same. The only reason she really bothered now a days was the knowledge she gained with each stone, and the holy grail of immortality once she mastered time itself.
Black eyes tracked the circling movement of the other mare, without ever moving her head. She flexed her long, powerful wings, the oily black plumage flawless an expansive. To start with she had found them cumbersome. But now she had learned to control them she had learned how useful they were. Never mind the advantages gained by flight, a swan could break a human arm with its wings, so imagine what could be broken with hers. And if all that failed, there was always the five gemstones set in a cross in the centre of her chest, with the larger diamond central. When the scrutiny was complete she turned her dead gaze back to meet the eyes of her queen. She watched as the mare’s flesh slid from her bones. Interesting... and yet still she didn’t react or flinch.
I always made sure my sisters were capable of looking after themselves, regardless of their natural talents. I shall see to it that some sparring exercises are set up at some point. Aside from assessing and enhancing the abilities of our sisterhood it would be a good opportunity to build strong working relationships between those members of our kingdom who do not yet really know one another.
She took the authoritative line because it was the way she had always been. Taking charge was what she did because it was what she knew. She ran life like a business, with action plans and strategies. If she could have charts she would.
