Nights were rarely peaceful for El Aran. Pale moonlight illuminated the rough sand beneath her hooves, giving the desert the illusion of softness, of peace. Pressing her dark hooves into the grainy carpet of her home in an attempt to reassert reality, the black mare stared wide-eyed at the land that rolled and humped away from the oasis. Behind her was safety, security to be found under the sparse-leafed trees and beside what remained of the whispering pool of water. She could let the gentle sounds of the night pull her back into a state of semi-security and from there into sleep. If she backed up, turned and walked and settled herself at the base of one of the trees, perhaps the land’s lullaby would ease the thundering beat in her chest. Her heart had not raced so in many seasons. But El Aran had not resided in a desert for a long, long time. She should have expected this. It was not new. Sweat soaked her black coat and she stood trembling at the edge of the oasis, staring into the night and waiting for her daytime happiness to come crashing down around her ears in the form of blunt, cracked hooves and flat yellow teeth.
