scylla -----
by anawar out of daenerys

Scylla waits with baited breath as Dany stops, and then her heart almost stops beating as her mother slowly turns around to face them. Seeing Dany torn apart and defeated has been hard on Scylla, but she sees changes in her dam as Dany processes everything that has just been blurted out. If she’d known long before now that she could use her voice to such an effect on her mother, she probably would have used it more.

Her ears go back slightly as El Aran demands to know who she is, speaking of her as if she’s caused some great strife between them. She doesn’t know their history at all – it’s probably a complicated one if her mother’s reaction to El Aran and Encantador is any indication – but she doesn’t think she deserves to be treated like that. She also doesn’t like the way El Aran is speaking to Dany; even though the black mare obviously has no idea of what they’d had to live with under Dorian, she should still have some compassion.

She’s confused when her mother doesn’t answer El Aran’s question, choosing instead to plead – but plead for what? It almost sounds as if Dany wants El Aran to drop the subject, as if she’s ashamed of Scylla’s very existence. The thought sends ice through her heart and she blinks, trying to keep her thoughts neutral. She won’t believe such a negative thing about her mother unless Dany herself confirms it.

It shocks her further when Encantador steps up and answers for Dany. Scylla’s dark eyes dart back to the stallion, taking him in completely for the first time since his silent arrival. He looks more comfortable here, much less fidgety than he had during their meeting in the Ledge.

She nods in confirmation of his words, wondering idly how he knows of her sister (and again wondering why Myrcella hadn’t turned up with their mother), before speaking directly to him. ”Encantador, long time no see,” she says with a respectful tilt of her head. ”You look well.”

Scylla turns back to her mother as Dany defends her past actions. She understands and agrees with her mother; once she’d been old enough to understand Dorian’s nature, she’d decided that she would never run, never show him any fear. Her dam had never appeared to have such strength and perhaps Scylla is now finding out why. Was it the perceived loss of this family, which Dany seems to love so dearly, that had led them into Dorian’s trap in the first place?

She knows that now isn’t the time to ask those questions. If she’s going to stay here with her mother, she’s sure she’ll get whatever answers she needs in due time. She looks from Dany to El Aran to Encantador, hoping the latter two will allow her mother to give the explanation she’s sure they want, even if they won’t admit it out loud. If they don’t, Scylla knows there’s a good chance that Dany will break.
