Hi Guys -
I wrote a couple years back when I was getting my PhD at Florida. We shared a flight to London (and other party favors) back in March 1991.
A friend of mine, John Immonen (lead singer and guitarist for a band called Two-Fisted Cool) died of a heart attack a couple years ago. His son, Van, has Spinal Bifida. We all went to Notre Dame and are planning on being in Chicago for the ND-Miami game on October 6, 2012 at Soldier Field. The idea was floated about doing a benefit show in Chicago October 5. We are trying to see if we can take it from a "small benefit" (right now we have two mostly-defunct acts: Two-Fisted Cool - John's old band from Chicago, Pre-Sweat Itchies - John's old band from South Bend, and a band fronted by a resurrected Frank Allison out of Ann Arbor). John used to share a practice space with Smashing Pumpkins and we are working on getting them interested, although first indication is that they will be in the road. To be honest, we just concocted this notion this past week.
We have contacts with Freddy Jones (through our time in South Bend), and a number of other performers (Mark Bryan, Adam Duritz, Michelle Shocked, Natalie Merchant, Kim Deal, Mary Cutrufello) and some other longer-shot possibilities (Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, Trey Anastasio, and Tom Petty).
Right now, I am a researcher at UMass and seeking a full-time faculty position. I also run a nonprofit that provides international humanitarian assistance in Ecuador (with another program opening next year in Ghana) - it is run out of Nashua - so I am familiar with fundraising activities. Moreover, I used to own a venue in SF and we had some of the aforementioned acts play there back in the early/mid 90s.
