Hi Juney,

The claim is somewhat misleading. Kelp and iodine will only do this in very hefty doses. This overstimulates the thyroid and in response the thyroid starts shutting down to compensate.

Although you also have to be careful not to go even slightly overboard with iodine in cases of Hashimoto's thyroidosis. Iodine can aggravate this form of hypothyroidism if taken in excess.
