Re(7): Brand recognition... Posted on May 16, 2012 at 04:55:24 AM by Kevin Pacey
I can remember some years ago when I conducted a personal initiative (can't recall if I was a Governor at the time).
I emailed 150-200 email addresses of Governors and club execs that were listed on the CFCs website. Many emails bounced, but certainly less than half.
I asked each recipient if they would consider arranging for a simul exhibition to be held in their area by a certain date (many months later), the purpose of which would be to promote the CFC in their area.
I got back only about six responses. Some of these people liked the idea, but wanted the CFC to be involved in announcing the date(s) such simuls might be held, whether or not in a coordinated fashion. One person sarcastically suggested he'd arrange for the simul, but that I'd organize it (he was out in B.C., and I'm in Ottawa).
I suppose I could have tried to run with the positive responses somehow, but I dropped the idea as not likely being fruitful enough.
Years later a motion was passed by the CFC Governors declaring that we'd have a National Chess Week, in which simuls would be held that week across the country, ideally covered by the media as much as possible. However, nothing happened afterwards. For one thing, the Executive did not start the ball rolling, and as far as I can tell it was up to them to lead, as usual.
If not even many CFC Governors and club execs can be motivated to do such a thing as setting up a simul to promote the CFC, you can see one reason I have so much hesitation about your plan, which requires possibly (much?) more effort on all of these organizers' parts than arranging a one time simul.
