Re(4): Thyroid and Adrenal

Hi Ky,

A half a cup of dulse is quite a bit not only for the iodine but also for the laxative effect. If the person has an autoimmune condition then that high of a level of polysaccharides can also be an issue.

As far as the iodine content goes we do not need large amounts of iodine daily. In fact this can be counterproductive since this can force the thyroid in to an overactive state temporarily. This leads to the thyroid shutting down more in compensation though. Same principle as when doctors sometimes give large amounts of thyroid hormone to slow down an overactive thyroid.

Excess iodine also aggravates Hashimoto's thyroidosis.

Even though dulse is considerably safer than some other iodine sources such as potassium iodide (KI) or Lugol's solution it is still possible to get to much iodine from dulse.

I recommend sticking to a lower dose such as 1 teaspoon 3 times daily.
