avenion's closure.
IP: 95.149.90.160

After a long and wonderful run, the horse RPG Avenion is closing down.

Why am I telling you this? I was going to leave it, but I felt the need to acknowledge this somehow. I think most people don’t realise how closely Shaman and Avenion were connected, so I’d like to take a couple of minutes of your time to tell you something of our joint history.

Green*star and I both played on long-time horse RPG Hoof Prince together, back in the days when Shenan ran it. Purely by coincidence, we both started working on our own RPGs at around the same time. I believe Avenion opened first, but they can’t have been more than a few months apart. At the time, Avenion and Shaman were sometimes referred to as horse/humanoid equivalents of each other because they both incorporated the element of familiars (again, purely coincidentally).

Shenan fully supported the setting up of our two sites, and both she and Hoof Prince helped a lot in those early days with getting Shaman and Avenion off the ground. The three sites were so closely linked, Hoof Prince was usually referred to as the ‘mother site’ of Avenion and Shaman, which meant the two of us truly were sister sites. In Shaman’s first year or so I was referring to Shenan for almost every issue, and it is true to say that without her support and input we wouldn’t be here today. When Hoof Prince first got its domain name, www.hoofprince.com with the Awardspace host, one of Shenan’s first acts was to offer a domain and free hosting space to Avenion and Hoof Prince. The three of us shared hosting and all had access to each other’s sites.

Avenion broke away from the joint hosting first – some time before 24th December 2010, which is when Shaman broke away and moved over to Hostica. Shenan had stepped down as owner of Hoof Prince earlier in the year, passing over to Kels, Nicole and Piff. Our three sites went their separate ways, but maintained close links – particularly among the owners.

After three wonderful years, Avenion finally shut down on June 8th 2012 after the staff admitted that they didn’t have the time to run it anymore. Among many things, it will be remembered in the RPG community as a whole for its unique concept of axia, for bringing something new to elemental horse sites and for its cutting-edge innovation in terms of web design. Avenion’s layouts have been in the inspiration for RPG-owners everywhere, and have encouraged a new kind of competitiveness amongst owners for innovation which ultimately ends in better, prettier and more user-friendly layouts for you guys to use.

For those who never really saw Avenion, I encourage you to take a click around the still-online site. The link is here: www.avenion.net.
Goodbye, Avenion.
