Romance is in the air...this is probably the most beautiful and scenic place in Blossom Forest. For the athletic and determined to come with their mates, for time away from pups. Only adults may come here; some of the ledges are too far apart for teens or pups to cross and some too high to scale.

Ray knows she's nervous the moment he steps up to her and he feels the play of her emotions in the way her breath catches briefly in her throat, how she pauses in her relaxation, how she goes soft, almost against him but not quite. as he's speaking, whispering words that he'd never thought he'd let anyone hear, Ray's knotted stomach unravels itself and it feels as though a burden has just fallen heavily from his shoulders. a jolt of something -- something he cannot place no matter how hard he tries to pinpoint it -- lances through his chest, sharp and flirting the line between pleasant and unpleasant. he's felt this before, once, he remembers that moment acutely, too; it'd been alone, with Soul, and her three perfect children bundled against her side, while she spoke to him in broken words that told him of her heartbreak and instinctively, he wants to tamp this feeling down. he doesn't love Misty like that -- not quite yet. he doesn't think he could allow himself to give his heart away so freely to anyway, even if she is the most kindhearted, the most fragile, the girl that is his closest thing to perfect. right now is fine with him. right now is amazing; and he does not want to give up the euphoric rush in his veins as he pours his true feelings to her. when was the last time he had done this? he can't even remember.

but then, just as quickly as he is happy, his gut floods with fear. Ray is afraid. after he draws away he can only stare, his face nearly expressionless save for the vulnerably hunched set of his shoulders. she looks surprised -- hell, he's surprised even his own self. Raylen has to keep from stumbling back a step when she pushes herself into his chest; not because he can't bear the force of her, but because he's shocked to the bone. the word faith brings a cynical arch to his mouth but he pushes back the urge to laugh bitterly like he normally would -- when was the last time he'd had that? faith in something? complete and utter trust in something. he can't remember. he can't remember a lot of things -- Ray especially can't remember the time when he'd shed the barest hints of optimism and become this harshly realistic, bordering on pessimistic wolf. perhaps that's simply what life does to you. optimism has seemed to go hand in hand with naivety.

Misty's smiling at him softly but he doesn't deserve her smile. he doesn't deserve that, or any of her. any part of her. but he allows himself to be selfish, takes a breath, and fights against the way he wants to mentally berate himself some more. that's not what she wants, so that's what he will not do. for several long moments, he just watches her, his teal gaze unflinching and unmoving from hers. Ray wants forgiveness -- for once, it feels right. it feels good to be forgiven, and he'll take it. but it's those last words, to stay. to stay with her. does that mean she wants him here? will saying yes be a promise of forever?

why is he thinking over this so much? why is this such a hard decision for him?

so he stops. Ray stops thinking. he shuts down, slams down a barrier over everything saying no, every hurt and pained and torn part of him. none of that. no more hurt -- she says to stop letting it hurt and he will. wordlessly, he nods, acquiesces. Ray's not sure if he can say anything, because it feels like every word is plastered to his tongue and his tongue is dry, stuck to the roof of his parched mouth.

i'm not strong enough for the both of us.
