The spotted mare had always enjoyed the willows. In their shade, the heather and clover were deep and made the ground comfortable. She always passed the early morning in the quiet beneath them. Her still frame was nearly invisible in the twisting light.
She was pulled from dreams sharply. The sound of footfalls. She jerked her head up. Someone else? Worry tightened in her stomach as she saw the new frame come in. The patchy white and tan made the visitor clearly visible against the green and dusty backdrop. As it got closer, Fayte could see it was a mare. She seemed to stare in awe at one of the willows in particular - the old one across the river.
Fayte was about to step out of her leafy sanctuary to greet the newcomer when Bondurant approached her. Fayte had missed his company - and she wanted to speak with him now that summer was past its peak. But she supposed now would not be the time to discuss private matters.
So she decided she would join, if only because she was now up and if a discussion was to be had this close to her bed, she wouldn’t get back to sleep. She supposed she would have to cut her reading tonight short. But she didn’t particularly mind it. She trotted through the low part of the river and up to the bank, wondering how to greet both.
She offered Bondurant a smile, and she knew she couldn’t quite shake the sleep from her dark eyes. Maybe, though, he didn’t notice it. She didn’t want anyone to feel guilty for rousing her early.
“Hello, Bondurant,” She addressed her stallion first. She suspected this newcomer was like Acorn - not someone Bondurant brought from the Crossing. She turned her attention to the mare. “I always liked that old tree, I’d say every willow in the grove here is related to it.”
That sounded stupid, but clearly it held the mare’s interest. Fayte wondered why that was.
For it is not the Stars that determine our destiny - but ourselves
