B O N D U R A N T
Noises, always noises in the forest and it kept him on edge most of the time. True, most of the noise could be attributed to squirrels or some other small, skittering creature that was harmless, but he could not risk not investigating every noise. Fall was coming and then winter, the seasons in which the wolves took great interest in the forests equine inhabitants. The very thought of those canines sent his hair bristling. So when he heard the snap of twigs underfoot of a heavier creature (certainly heavier than a squirrel) he was off in a streak of copper and white.
Not until he saw her making her way gracefully through the trees did his heart and pace slow. Somehow mares kept wandering into the borders of his home, but he wasn’t complaining. The sound with which she summoned him spurred him into movement again. It was not a helpless cry for a savior, but almost akin to a challenge and that intrigued him. A deep nicker rumbled from his chest as he approached her, stopping a short distance across the clearing. Though she had entered his home he still gave her respect. She was lean, legs almost as long as his and curvaceous, a fact he could not miss due to autumns approach. Her standing there, as if challenging the world, left him at a loss for words.
“Welcome,” he said finally, his black tail flicking lazily against his hocks. He considered asking her what she was doing here, but in truth he wasn’t one to complain about a strong mare inhabiting his home. All he could think however was what had brought her here as well. The towering trees drew many for all reasons.
