B O N D U R A N T
He had seen her over the course of the last few days more than he had in a long time. Keeping to herself, entirely shunning and rejecting close contact with anyone, she was often far from the herd proper. Metaphorically he furrowed his brow. The recent challenge for the Forest had him on edge and it had been his goal to keep everyone close together in one area of the woods or another. This was the time of year that the wolves were known to become more active, taking advantage of the distractions hormones provided to pick off the unsuspecting. Bondurant was entirely suspect.
For a moment he merely watched her through the trees, her chest rising and falling with each breath, the sunlight dancing off the scars that patterned and crisscrossed over her tawny hide. How many times had he wondered what lay beneath it all. He knew she was not likely to tell him, more often than not he received the rebuttal of her hooves and teeth in answer to anything else. He considered leaving her to whatever thoughts had drawn her off this afternoon, but ultimately his concern for her safety won out.
Slowly he approached, purposefully making noise by stepping on the dry limbs that littered the floor and making quiet, whickering noises. He paused a less than safe distance from her, but not entirely pressing in upon her personal space. He often thought of the day he had taken her from the crossing and drove her into the Forest. At first he had been ashamed of his actions, but ultimately he was proud to have proved himself to her. “What troubles you?” he drawled out finally, glancing over at her scarred face.
He was not holding his breath for an answer.
