| STEP BY STEP, HEART TO HEART, LEFT RIGHT LEFT I don’t know where my life went. One minute I was a gangly foal, exploring the world and seeing everything it had to offer, and the next minute here I am standing. I must have fallen asleep and let so much time fly by me. I don’t know how it’s possible to just fall asleep and continue sleeping, because I’m an adult now. I wonder how much time has gone by, how old I am now. I don’t feel old. I still feel youthful, although my downy fur is now adult hair. I have a flowing mane and tail, and none of my hair is gray.
Assuming I am not ancient, I wander to the Field, or what I remember the field being. As a foal I didn’t experience much except playing and the general lay of the land. Beqanna has changed since I was younger, but honestly, not by much. The lay of the land was basically the same. A new tree here and there, but I don’t have a picture perfect memory, I just know it is not the same as it was when I…fell asleep?
Summer is here, and the warmth from the sun is nice across my back. I approach a stream to glance at my reflection. When I look down, I see pale blue eyes staring back at me. I almost don’t recognize myself, it’s so strange. My face is mostly white with a buckskin medicine hat. I can’t see the rest of my body, and I don’t turn to view it. I don’t care. I’m sure there are few buckskin splotches to match my head. If I was to turn and look, I would see my right flank is heavily covered in buckskin spots spreading from one large spot across my barrel, and my left side is mostly white, with one larger patch across my hindquarters. I’m sure, just from a glance, my hind legs are like my front, only white.
The field isn’t the most pleasant place. Haughty mares huffing about, flaunting everything they have in hopes a stallion will come whisk them off of their hooves and take them home. Some are looking for kingdoms, somewhere they can be tough and show off their skills and abilities. I, myself, would like a kingdom to call home. Not because I want power, but because a herd is not a fitting home for me. I don’t want to live under the thumb of some stallion. I don’t want to share one single stallion every breeding season with others mares, raise foals for him, some housewife life. That, is not for me.
So I stand in the field, awaiting my fate, the offers will come, I am sure. I am hoping I will be able to find the right offer for me, something that will stick out at me, call my name like I belong there.
