I smile, for real this time. “The pack’s been doing great lately. Ever since they started bringing in the captives we’ve been getting new recruits. Some of them are just obnoxious, like this one guy, Loki, you’ll know him when you see him. He’s a little runt, but he’s puffed himself up pretty good. And then there’s this one guy, I think he wants to eat Kershov, but I don’t think that ‘Shov will appreciate you killing him just yet. I’m a spy now! For real. But Arsione’s the head. But soon, I’m gonna be like a ninja! I don’t think even Kershov knows how I climb trees.” I prattle on excitedly about the pack, the wolves, and Kershov happily for a solid five minutes before noticing that Rue was… crying. For the first time I realize that we are completely alone. Part of having a friend means that you don’t hide yourself from them. That includes your tears. I realize for the first time that my cheeks are wet from my own shed tears. ''Does that mean we can start mending us?'' Rue asks. That’s when I completely lose it. I can’t answer her for fear that I’ll break down sobbing my eyes out. But the tears flow freely as I nod my head, still smileing. |
