Her lips met with his with an encouraging willingness, the warmth of her beneath his hands drawing him closer as he turned his head to resume the dance. It had been too long, too long since he had felt as close to someone as he did with Dyna in that moment. There was a wonderful quality about her, a strange blend of innocence and window that drew him in and held him. A warmth, and natural understanding that eased his ever present loneliness. A crown, Arthur thought, as his right hand strayed to her hip, made a man the loneliest in the Kingdom. He was not just a man, he was both more and less than that. He was a figure-head, a flagship, a symbol. The hardest decisions were his, and he was the one who had to live with the results of them. Understanding eased loneliness, she made him feel like a man again, returned his humanity to him with the ease in her eyes. He was a King, it was an inescapable part of who he was, but it was not the all of him. The part that she was seeing now, the softer portion of his soul, the part that had escaped most of the hardening influences of passing time, the scar-tissue of hard fought wars.

She fell forwards, tumbling free of her seat and landing upon the leaf-strewn floor, breaking the contact between them. Arthur felt her absence as a physical chill, as if her presence had warmed the very air around them. He needed her. For the first time in a long time, Arthur’s attention was not focused upon the past, or the future, but upon that very presence. The rest of the world did not exist, it was just Dyna, and the attic, the most glorious of escapes. Her laugh brought a smile to his face as the warmth in his eyes became more of a heat, as her hand, her warm hand, closed about his neck. The light pressure she applied brought him forwards, and he could feel her through his clothes, through her dress, as he returned her gentle kiss, softly at first. He barely registered the dull pain in his knees as they dug into the hard wood of the dusty floor, one hand moving forwards to support his weight, as his body lengthened in order to stop their lips from parting again, his other resting tenderly upon the soft skin of her thigh.

His name passed from between her lips in a deep whisper, and he moved his mouth away from hers, planting little kisses down the elegant line of her neck. “Dyna?” he returned, finally, just as he reached her collarbone, his voice having taken on a slight husky quality. He moved his legs, bringing himself even closer to her, as he withdrew his face from hers, his fingers running through her hair to move the fly-away strands from her face. Arthur’s smile was encouraging, the fondness in his eyes impossible to miss, but there was an inescapable passion there, the burning want lending intensity to the usual coolness of his expression, a look, a need, focused only on her.
