The forest stands tall and lush here; ancient trees reach weather-twisted arms to the sky, fighting monster-like storm clouds back with their interlacing fingers. Shadow seems to lurk everywhere you look, but it spills calmly, coolly, inspiring a sense of stealthy calm or protection rather than unease. That is, if you've forgotten what kind of creature might be stalking just out of sight...Abendrot is a land cradled by the dark woods on all sides; in the center, some of the larger trees stay behind to reveal a small plateau - a citadel where this pack can gather and defend itself from invaders. There are, of course, softer sides to the land. Clearings here and there allow the sun to throw down its rays in incongruously resplendent gold showers. Ignore the lingering scents of blood spattered here and there along the borders: those do not concern you. The river on one edge of the territory is playful enough when it hasn't been gorged by violent rain. You can choose to note the ragged claw marks raked down tree trunks and the forest floor as friendly "Home Sweet Home" signs, if you wish.

All who treasure loyalty, order, victory, and the occasional indulgence of raw visceral pleasure are welcome, once they've been approved by the ever-watchful eyes of Abendrot's Alpha. But keep one thing in mind: no matter what your motive, this is not a fool's Paradise. This is the land of soldiers, assassins, and spies. This is ABENDROT.

Make up your mind quickly and prepare to prove your worth. You wouldn't want to add to those blood spatters, would you...?

“Wait here, filth.”

Kershov forcibly threw his charge into the dirt, ignoring the prisoner’s muffled whimper and the way blood seemed to seep in a pool under his broken body. The alabaster Alpha didn’t need this captured slave to be in good condition when he dragged his sorry body across Abendrot’s border—Ker just needed him to be alive. With another savage bite on the prisoner’s shoulder, Kershov loped forward a bit, nose to the ground, testing this side of his fence before returning into his rightful territory. All seemed well: Abendrot’s scent mark flared strong and proud against stately trees and scattered boulders, warning the faint of heart away. And then . . . another scent . . .

Snowy hackles bristled as Kershov detected the fresh perfume of a female pup nearby. She had passed by here no more than half an hour ago—and had not turned around, judging by the way her trail curved up around the wall. Snarling for his charge to follow, not caring that the battered brute could barely pick himself up, Ker marched closer to the stranger . . . tracking her.

Obsidian eyes sliced over the horizon until he beheld the flaming form of Firecrest waiting on the border, speaking with a small crimson-splashed pup. Kershov tilted his head, intrigued: Abendrot had been drawing in young ones like a magnet lately. First it had been Ivy and Ru, then pregnant Mae . . . was the callow creature the victim of abandonment? Or was she just stupid? Children had no place in the army—not unless they showed signs of true potential.

Glancing over his tough-muscled shoulder to ensure the bleeding mutt behind him was still following, Kershov stalked toward the girls, ears perked in interest. “What do we have here, Firecrest? A little lost orphan?” As Kershov’s prisoner limped up, keeping a respectful distance from the King, Kershov made no move to hide his wounded presence. Let the little one look upon the consequences of wronging Ker’s pack. Let her see the brute’s torn hide and miserable face. “What is her title? And why are we spending the time speaking to her, rather than sending her back to safety?”

He circled around the child until he stood by the ember-born spy. He stood close enough to Firecrest to flick his tail lightly across her flank, which he did as a sign that he appreciated her dealing with the short newcomer.
