Spring had arrived and with it, Fayte had felt something change. Winter still clung to the woods. There had been too much quiet or so it seemed to the appaloosa. It was one such twilight when instinct had instructed her to find some place out of the way. Deep in the woods, and alone she wandered. She both knew and did not know what what happening. It was strange, confusing and exciting.

Life is a strange thing, and it's cycle is beautiful and mysterious. It likes to begin in the quiet - between the mother and her unborn. It seems to be done best here - in the depths of the dark wood. A few mockingbirds, maybe a raven or two, heard the quiet grunts of the mother in her first labor. Only a fox was witness to the remarkable thing that happened as new life came into being.

The shadows had disappeared into the night when it was over. When the pains stopped. Fayte was tired, but there was a sense of pride in her heart. She turned her neck to look behind her at the little thing that had newly arrived. Still driven by instinct she took to her feet and began to nuzzle and clean the filly.

A filly!

Thank the Stars above it was a filly! A pretty little creature, white was everywhere on her, but still she bore spots. Fayte could not tell the color in this light, but she could make the distinct, moon-like glow that came off the greater white of the girl. She smiled, her heart beating proudly as the little filly nuzzled her back. Her heart beat frantically.

Seasons of carrying, of watching, of hoping, and here it was in all its innocence looking up at her. She was happy. She was proud. And she was a mother - for the first time.

The cycle begins anew.
