Another confirmation, from March 1997, Springfield newspapers. This sighting was evidence of a breeding population. An except:
"The best hard evidence to date of a breeding population of mountain lions in the wild in
New England was found in Vermont in 1994. A man saw what he identified as three cougars,
a female and two cubs, walking in single file on the snow near Lake Eligo in Craftsbury.
A video was made of the tracks (not of the cougars as was widely reported), and Vermont
wildlife officials followed the characteristic footprints and found droppings or scat from the cats.
The scat was analyzed at the National Fish & Wildlife Forensics Laboratory in Oregon and, indeed,
cougar hairs were found to be present in it." Replies:
