aurora borealis- noun plural: An aurora that occurs in northern regions of the earth. Also called northern lights.

In the middle of a dense forest of coniferous trees lies the Aurora Borealis pack, its name coming from its location. At certain times of the year, the northern lights appear, dancing almost magically in the sky. A narrow trail leads you through the close evergreens. Giving into temptation, you begin moving your paws. By venturing into this territory, you are venturing into a land belonging to a pair of feared leaders. You have heard rumors of them...but you decide to take your chances and hope that the tales of blood and death are merely fabricated stories to scare wolves.

You have walked nearly five minutes before you realize the sound of paws stepping somewhere from behind. Deciding that you've made a mistake, you quickly turn around, but find that you cannot go any further. Standing before you is one of the mighty kings you've heard of. His blood red pelt clings over perfectly toned bands of muscle. But that isn't what causes such fear in your veins. One of his amber eyes has a horrid, bleeding scar across it, and his good eye seems to stare right through you. His face is expressionless, giving off none of his intentions. You cower away as his jaws part.

"I'm Hell Demon."

His voice was deep and cut through the air like a hot knife through butter. Right where he left off, another voice picks up from behind you. You whirl around and find yourself facing another male with steely muscles beneath his pelt, which seems to consist of every shade of brown. He had startled you, and you're amazed how you hadn't at all detected his approach.

"And I am Ghost...we're the alphas of Aurora Borealis."

His deep voice was laced thickly with a Native American accent. His own golden eyes are directing a harsh glare your way. Now you're caught in the middle...your breathing has become heavy in your panic and you're not sure which to face.

"You've foolishly trespassed into our territory. You face the one called Hell Demon's whose voice is once more addressing you. Get out, or become a corpse along our border."

It's obvious they mean business. So now it's up to you...take your chances and stay, or heed their warning and waste no time getting out with your life.

I try to focus on everything around me, not wanting to think about my crawling insides, my incessant need to show my teeth at something. I know this feeling. I've had it once before, right before the black outs began. When I hear Sin's voice, I glance up, listening with as much rapt attention as I can afford to give her. She scolds the new wolf first for not knowing whose in charge but then she switches to a kinder tone, telling the wolf if she can go by the rules of the pack then she can join. She informs us that she did some recruiting and that the new wolves will be bringing in a fresh kill soon. I try not to think about the fresh kill, my skin shuddering with pleasure at the thought of all that blood.

She changes subjects, the stolen children coming up next and I can practically feel her eyes boring into Akina, as if trying to gauge how she will react to this news. She finally admits that she went to find the stolen kids and that they have no recollection of their past life. They are happy and do not know who she is. Even in my distracted state, I feel something resembling a heart drop in my chest. That must be a blow for her. I turn my head just enough to catch a measured glimpse of Akina. This will be hard for her too. She loved her children. The thought of them not knowing her....that will eat her up inside.

She dismisses the subject. The children are to be left alone. The hunt is over. I feel a deep rumbling inside. The children are not where they belong. They are not home. Sin starts making rounds to her members, stopping at Vela first. She nuzzles her friend before coming to me. She nuzzles in my neck and I tense, frozen, unable to speak or move. I hear her soft speech but the only hint that I heard is my golden eyes staring into her own and a lone ear flicking back. Then she moves on to Akina though she doesn't touch her.

Finally she goes back to the center and calls out ranks. I'm surprised to hear that I share Beta with Cody. I never thought I'd rise that far in rank. I catch a small glimpse of Cody and I nod in his direction, congratulating him before I look away. Akina is Beta female. She assigns the pack to go out in pairs and do some recruiting. I can hardly focus by now because Akina is sitting next to me, her perfume impairing me as her fur brushes against my own. It's a tantalizing feeling, something so right and yet so forbidden.

I turn my head to look at her and she's looking right back. Our eyes meet and it's like a live pulse running through my body. She makes me feel alive. She looks down when I mention the children and I can tell this subject is still a raw wound for her. It may be for a long time. She tells me that one is gone and the other she has yet to find. She adds on that she wishes I had found her. I think about the rough time I've been having lately, the lack of sleep, the nightmares, the snarling at sudden noises and movements. I look down. Perhaps it's best that I didn't. I don't want to hurt her.

Akina draws her attention to Sin but she knows what the alphess is about to say. She steps back but doesn't run as I had expected. I can see the heartbreak in her eyes as Sin tells the news. She is devastated. She refuses to look at her alpha after the decree. She closes her eyes and silent tears wash down her face. I want to comfort her but I don't know how. Without thinking, I reach over and gently run my rough tongue up her cheek, gathering the fallen tears before I look away, not sure if I want to see her reaction.

Rushing Water comes in at some point but I can barely keep my attention on anything by now. She steps forward after Sin, giving a small speech before telling us of her imminent fate. I never knew Rushing Water was that old. I figured she was younger than me.

Zig must have noticed something because when I look her way, she smiles and nods. I give a stiff nod back but I can't bring my lips to form a smile. I look down at the ground, still focused on my inner battle. I won't drop my barriers so low for him to take over, not again and certainly not right now with Akina so close.
