The boy was alone.

It wasn't all that often that he wandered by himself, though with the advent of his adolescence and his mother's incredibly lax vigilance over himself or any of his siblings, the boy found himself called to movement more and more. Meteor was his home, or so he supposed; he'd never interacted with anyone there besides his siblings and his father and his mother, and calling them "company" was stretching the term to its enth degree. The dark pup hadn't gone very far from the pack that he called home, even in his young, "rebellious" stages a bit reluctant to venture too far from the relative safety of the lunatic lands he knew well. He was up towards Traydon's headwaters, and it had been the delight of his golden eyes to see the fishy river turn to ice before his very gaze.

Attica fit the look of the Mountain at this time, with his dark pelt burnished with silver looking a bit frosted over himself. His eyes were a bright and cunning gold, perhaps a little strange for a boy his age whose blue eyes should have just been fading; they were jarring and unusual, very much his father's eyes with their brightness and keenness. His father. Alte his mother did not love his father, this he knew; it was doubtful as to whether or not she loved him, or Tanith or Vetinari or Xanthus, or even herself, a notion that brought a strange kind of sadness to the boy that got into his heart. He didn't like that melancholy, but now it was there, invoked simply by the consideration of his always-weary, blank-eyed mother and her dispassionate rearing of him and his siblings.

Long-limbed and sleek, the mixed-breed hybrid stepped quietly, picking his way and maintaining his vigilance even as he daydreamed. If living in Meteor had taught him one thing, it was this: never let your guard down, lest some monster proceed to carry you away.
