At the densest section of the forest, there is a brief clearing where a steady flow of water streams down the slippery stone staircase. The water here is cool and refreshing. Staircase Falls has been rumoured to be the place where reality is met by magic; where peaceful spirits dwell. They are rumoured to have healing powers that are used to help the desperately hurt, though no one has experienced this, except for, perhaps, Kaive.

Bjomolf felt Trace’s fur move against as she moved further back on the small shelf. The night was now upon them and judging the temperature and her thinner fur than his, he guessed she was cold. The large male shifted slightly to block the entrance almost completely. The wind whispered of approaching winter as it swept across the entrance, blocked by his thick coat. The ceiling was slanted at one side, forcing him to lay down as he moved. His paws stretched out in front of him, back legs tucked beneath him and tail hanging off the edge of the rock. His head still held high, ears both slightly to the side so that they wouldn’t crush against the rock ceiling.

He watched her patiently as she explained her story, not offering any answers until she had finished. He was surprised that her parents had been run out, but glad that she’d not been involved so much in the reason; getting to know someone who’d caused trouble for packs probably wasn’t the best idea. He didn’t expect her to carry on speaking, and was at a loss of words when she mentioned the death of the male she loved. It was probably still a fresh wound for her, so he doubted anything he could say would help. Besides, he wasn’t the type to offer up those kinds of words to anyone. Instead, he stayed silent, letting her talk it out to him as she looked to her paws.

When she looked back up he turned his head, despite her expression being normal, uncomfortable. He looked up through a narrow gap in the rock where the night sky was visible, stars covered by a thick layer of clouds; no wonder it was so dark this evening. Another wind came past. This one, however, was strong enough for him to feel its icy bite. The air gushed into the crevice, swirling around to coat them in an icy cold, then left with only raised hairs and shivering as the reminder it was there. He ducked his head as it arrived, gritting his teeth in annoyance, then looked up to see how she’d fared against the last gust of wind.
