Vilkas perked up at a distant sound. The splashing of water and the breaking of twigs. Something was in this area. pressing his ears close to his head, he lifted his nose in attempts to drink in any scent that was near by. However; he could barely even smell the river that hurried beside him. He'd forgotten that his sense of smell had been rendered useless. Vilkas decided to follow the river, perhaps he'd find some game along the way. He'd noticed that the river was fish ridden, unfortunately, he'd never been taught to fish, so the nimble silver bodies meant nothing to him.

Keeping himself close to the river bank, he'd found himself a few thick field mice who had found themselves to a nice drink in some of the more shallow, and calmer parts of the river. But the mice weren't enough to fill him completely. He'd need something more. Pausing, Vilkas peered over the edge of the river bank and into the water. A few fish leaped into the air, twisting and turning as they fell, smacking the water. Vilkas watched as near by birds took turns swooping and lunging at the water, emerging with their game. Vilkas' belly groaned as watched the fish hustle around.

There was no compensation for an empty belly and a lonely heart.
