SAMPLE ..
For the hot months, the evening air was surprisingly cool. The wind worked its way through Cass’s long fur and he frowned at the chill. His paws beat the familiar path through the woods. He had never been here before, and yet it was just like any other countless forest he had found himself in. The trees were thick and dark, the broad leaves rustling overhead. Moss grew springy and abundant on either side of the trail. Clearly, this was a common way of travel for others like him.
Cass wasn’t really sure where he was headed. Not that he ever truly had a destination in mind but this was the first time in a long while that he had simply picked a direction and just kept going. It was two weeks since he had left Jep with Talbot. The pup had grown old enough to hunt and Talbot had always been closest with the yearling. So it had been time to move on. It had been a sad parting, and Jep had even refused to speak to Cass, but it was for the better.
Cass always preferred solitude eventually.
The trees opened up to a wide meadow. The swaying grass brushed Cass’s stomach as he moved towards the center. Everything was simultaneously bright and washed out. The sun was setting steadily but the full moon had risen, huge and round against the purple sky. Cass observed it with his usual flat expression and stopped. His body seemed to hum at the sudden stillness. It occurred to the wolf that he had been on the move for almost an entire day. Exhaustion flooded through him like an ill recalled memory and Cass sunk to his haunches.
The meadow stretched out in all directions. He was as alone as he had wished.
