Aplos Riverside

Moladion’s powerful, winding river...
Aplos River is a broad, slow-moving river originating from somewhere beneath the mountains of Spirane and feeding Iromar’s moors in the south. The northern parts of the river are known for their strong currents, with the water becoming slow moving in the south. The riverbanks vary along its course, ranging from soft hummock grasses to small groups of pine, and sometimes nothing but pebbles and sand. Crossing can be difficult at times, but it can be swam or bridged by fallen trees or boulders alike.

Being with Vasyenka was all Poseidon had known. It had always been the two of them against the world. Or, at least, that’s what Vasy always said, but these days Poseidon was beginning to realise that perhaps they didn’t have to be against anything. Aside from his heart-brother, Po’s childhood had been rather empty, quiet. There were the two females who watched from the shadows, so stealthy and quick, there one minute and gone the next. They seemed at times, as insubstantial as the smoke and mist they so strongly resembled, so that Poseidon, at times, wondered whether they were real, even as his nose told him they were (and the food they left for him and Vasy, the food was real). Apart from Vasyenka, all that Poseidon could be sure of from his childhood was the scent and the warmth of a wild red wolfess. And then there was a strange voice that was the very first he remembered. I'll be right back Poseidon, I'll only be just a moment. I’ll be right back Poseidon… Poseidon, Poseidon, Poseidon.

The voice was how he knew his name. The red wolf was how he knew comfort. The wispy figures of smoke and bone were how he knew safety and the benefits of a full belly before he was able to hunt for himself. Vasyenka was how Poseidon knew what it was like to have a friend, a companion, someone who would never leave you. Vasyenka was the reason that Poseidon would never know the meaning of loneliness. It seemed that everyone Poseidon met taught him something, benefitted him in some way. It was why he was so eager to meet others, despite Vasyenka’s aversion to the idea. Already, in the brief time they’d known Weylin, Poseidon was learning what it was like to belong to a group, an extended family of sorts. The half-deaf white wolf sat near the stranger now, studying her with curiosity, knowing that she wouldn’t be a stranger for long, wondering with excitement what she would teach him.

His tail twitched, set off by the female’s own tail, and he turned his head slightly when she spoke, so that he’d have the best chance of catching her words. Pleased that he had indeed caught most of them (he thinks), Poseidon takes a moment to looking around, as if looking to see if anyone else was around. Nope, no-one. And no sign of the two who lurked in the shadows either. “Not hiding? Yes. Don’t need to hide. Not from me.” Poseidon grinned again, tail beating a rhythm now. He then became still, smile dropping from his lips as he concentrated. “Ssss… Neek… Sneaking?” The word was unfamiliar to him, and he glanced at her, eyes hopeful, to see if he’d said it correctly. “Sneaking?” He questioned again, hesitating for a moment, before dropping low and inching forwards, turning those eyes back to her, to see if he had the right meaning for the word, too. He sat up when she spoke again ears twitching (though, they seemed to be much less active than those of a regular wolf, due to the fact they only half-worked, and poorly at that). “Ahh…” Poseidon tilted his head. “Eee. Eee. Va. Aoibhe? Aoibhe! The young male barked happily, momentarily forgetting that he had yet to introduce himself. He calmed down and remembered, grinning again. “Poseidon. Or Po.”
