At the densest section of the forest, there is a brief clearing where a steady flow of water streams down the slippery stone staircase. The water here is cool and refreshing. Staircase Falls has been rumoured to be the place where reality is met by magic; where peaceful spirits dwell. They are rumoured to have healing powers that are used to help the desperately hurt, though no one has experienced this, except for, perhaps, Kaive.

Mae nodded with a pleasant smile on her face as they discussed her home lands. “Cloud watching is a good way to pass the time,” she replied, “It is certainly more fun in the warmth when you can fully relax.” She looked forward to the summer, with that being one of the reasons alongside her body being more accustomed to the heat. Though not a lazy wolf, lying in a clearing with the sun bearing down was one of her favourite ways to spend time. That is, when she was on her own. Being too shy when she was younger to join in with a lot of games, and then travelling alone until recently, she hadn’t spent as much time socialising as other wolves had. Their tones turned teasing about Terrel’s comfort on the ground and her own delicacies as a lady. She found herself laughing along with him, then responding to his comment, “Oh yes, you are certainly much stronger; muscles practically engulf the rest of you.” In a childish moment she stuck her tongue out, before flashing a beaming smile.

The femme watched as he leant over to take a drink without getting up. “Then again, I could be mistaken with that display of laziness,” she grinned, amused by his actions. She felt comfortable in his presence and was glad to have him as a friend. Her smile grew as he commented that she’d make an exceptional gamma, head ducking a little in embarrassment. She wouldn’t mind taking any rank so long as she could do the job, but she knew she couldn’t force someone out of their rank. They then spoke about Terrel aiming for the alpha position. He seemed almost ashamed about being scared of failure, and she wasn’t sure how to comfort him. She didn’t like seeing him look so upset. “Well,” she began, trying to think of what to say to make him feel better, “that’s a reasonable reaction, but if you don’t try you’ll never know.”

Her body was tense from then on, noticeably changing from a posture that had been relaxed. She stared at him, waiting for his answer. Her shoulders sagged a little when he said he didn’t think it was raining, but once again tensed when he voiced that he’d been mistaken. He mentioned seeking shelter and began to move away, but she sat there for a moment longer. As he left the couple of drops grew into a more steady sheet, not yet heavy but with the look of the clouds it would get worse before better. She jumped up, ears flat against her head, and fled in the direction Terrel had gone with the intention of following him to whatever shelter he found. She wasn’t afraid of rain, knowing how ridiculous that would be, but given where she grew up she’d never grown comfortable with it and became more startled when it fell.
