“Celidon’s eyes flicked from his fairy and then back to Penguin, his tail wagging with increased enthusiasm. Excitement was infectious. In fact, he was so absorbed in the great dane, that it took him a few seconds to register the feel of the girl’s hand pressing against his head. The Cu-Sith turned his head in order to lick her fingers happily, trying to stop his front paws from dancing. He wanted to play – he didn’t get the opportunity very often, the other dogs he knew were often so much smaller than he was, that he was worried he would hurt them. He was glad that his fairy was distracting. The girl took a step away from the two familiars, and Celidon finally closed the gap between them, releasing a couple of playful barks as he bounded after Penguin, nudged him lightly with his shoulder, and then bounced away again, spinning around, his green ears pricked forwards expectantly waiting for his new friend to follow.

Tristan couldn’t help but grin. He was so used to Celidon being quiet and far more sensible than he was. The Cu-Sith however was acting just like a puppy...a very-large and very-green puppy, and the contrast was so great that it was a physical effort not to laugh out loud. The Prince hadn’t noticed that the girl had approached him until she spoke, and slowly he dragged his gaze away from his familiar and focused upon her. Tristan didn’t have much experience with younger children. He was the youngest person in his immediate family by a considerable margin (his Uncle Mordred was seventeen) and he felt a little at a loss about how to act around the little girl. “Sort of,” he replied to her question, offering her a smile, “or at least, I will be, when I’m older.” The boy’s eyes scanned the yard for any sign of his father, but there was no indication of the King’s approach. He resigned himself to the fact that he wasn’t going to be able to extract himself with any speed from the encounter, and instead, with his usual adaptability, decided to make the best of it.

Nodding, Tristan lead the girl round to the front of the pony’s head. “This is Hal,” he explained, patting the horse firmly on the shoulder. She was, the Prince noticed, a little small, unless Hal lowered his head, she was going to have a little bit of difficulty reaching his nose. He spotted a crate leaning up against the stable wall, and moved away to get it, placing it down on the floor again, this time in front of Zel’s feet. He offered her his hand to help her up, and once she seemed to have her balance, he returned both of his hands to the reins to stop the pony from wandering off. “Be careful he doesn’t push you over, he should be fine but he has a habit of chewing things.” A guard was crossing the cobbled courtyard towards them at a rapid pace, and Tristan moved around to Hal’s other side, sidestepping the girl.
“Highness,” the guard said, with a nod of his head, “the King sends his apologies, he will be with your shortly, but he has just received another delivery of paperwork forwarded from the Pantheon and some of it requires his immediate attention.” Tristan tried to both not-smile, and not to roll his eyes. His Father always seemed to get held up by something, but the guard had obviously put a lot of work into trying to remember his message word for word. The Prince was forced to smother a laugh.
“Thank you,” he managed finally, “Please tell Father I’ll be waiting here, I have company,” and he gestured at Zel. The guard beamed at her, and waved, before nodding, turning on his heel, and hurrying off back towards the castle.

Turning back to the girl, and acting as if they had not been interrupted, Tristan nodded in the direction of the stables. “If you go in through that door, and turn to your right, you’ll find a big sack of pony nuts. You can bring a handful back for Hal, if you’d like.”
